Project Outline

Proposal of the Capstone Project

Why and How?

  • Many cities in China started to enforce the rule of garbage sorting policy. Most citizens know they have to obey the rules, but some people don't do so because it is too troublesome for them to obey this policy. Or some people, such as children and newcomer foreigners, are unable to distinguish the kind of garbage at first sight, so they don't sort it properly. The same issue is happening in our community in Shanghai.

  • My project is aiming to solve this problem, and it roughly divides into two parts.

  • First pat is targeted at adult by selling garbage bags with clear diagram and distinctive colors.

  • Second part is targeted at children by constructing a scavenger hunt game in the community to educate participants about the correct sorting for  daily garbage.

Goal of this project

For What?

In order to raise the awareness about the policy and the importance of doing it, I make this project.

It will help both the local cleaners and the residents.

Adding apparent diagram on the garbage bag I design can help people who cannot recognize each garbage for their divisions. They will be able to sort it easily. Children can also learn it when they are young.

After that, local cleaners can also ease their huge workload because they don't have to handle as much garbage in the wrong bin as before.

Plan for the project

In what steps?

There is a side gate market in our neighborhood. I will investigate the color representation for each garbage bin in our neighborhood. I will also sell the garbage bag at the side-gate. Since garbage bags are daily using objects, it will be very convenient for the neighbors to buy the bag just at the side gate market. Also, adding diagrams of common garbage that citizens dispose in daily life, it will be convenient for the people to recognize the garbage correctly. Since there are foreigner apartment in our neighborhood, that should be very helpful.

The same time, I will be putting board in the neighborhood and regulating a day event to let the children to explore in scavenger hunt. During the play, they can know the correct way to sort the garbage.

The project can be expanded to larger area once it succeed and can benefit more community other than my community.

Benchmarks for my project

Building up small goals

Deadline: October 28th

Benchmark 2:

Created a list of conclusions about each garbage divisions. Each containing at least ten most common garbage involved in each kind. Accordingly, determine the design for the garbage bag. For all five kinds of garbage, the design for it will be extremely helpful to have diagrams and words on it (In both Chinese and English)

Deadline: November 16th

Benchmark 3:

Research on the price and the design of the garbage bag. Learned some basic market skills and design the arrangement of market stall.

Deadline: November 24th

Benchmark 4

Complete designing survey regarding the most common color, garbage bin size and the common roads in the neighborhood which residents will wander round for the reference of scavenger hunt and also knowing how much children understand with the garbage sorting policy or the division of trash.

Deadline: December 10th

Benchmark 5

Design the initial question for the scavenger hunt (which will be revised after receiving the survey results)

Finish deliberating the questions, answers and locations in the neighborhood for the board in neighborhood and for scavenger hunt. Also agree on the design and the price with the manufacturer.

Deadline: February 3rd

Benchmark 9

Completed making all of the board with printing shops and placing them all around the neighborhood position previously surveyed.

Deadline: February 9th

Benchmark 10

Determined dates for scavenger hunt with collaboration with surrounding educational institutions (primary school, middle school, kindergarten)

Putting up the advertisement for the scavenger hunt

Successfully complete the events of scavenger hunt

(there will be more than one day, because maybe some people cannot attend on a specific day but other can)
