For the past few weeks, I have been designing the board's questions for the scavenger hunt according to the testimony of the cleaner interview recently interviewed. I am surprised by how diligent my neighbors are. According to cleaners, there are some occasions that residents misplace the garbage in the wrong category and fail to categorize the garbage at home by using separate garbage bags. However, most of the residents in my neighborhood did well for the past few months. When I asked the cleaner to approximate the percentage of wrong placement in the garbage category for the whole neighborhood for the past few weeks, she, surprisingly, said 20% to me. In that case, I will adjust my goal to improve the garbage sorting policy because most residents in our neighborhood are following the rules of Shanghai carefully. The new goal of my project becomes 10% wrong in the garbage sorting policy.
However, I still need to hand out the quizzes to ensure whether we can categorize the garbage correctly. The questions designed were based on testimonies from the cleaners. I selectively picked out those questions regarding the most common misplaced trash in our neighborhood. After designing the questions, I will be communicating with the garbage bag manufacturers, which is the second aspect of my project.
After careful deliberation, I decided to divide the questions into several sections in the following orders in Chinese:
Multiple Choices
Example Questions: Which of the following is not RECYCLABLE?
A. Toothbrush B. Milk Box C. Cloth D. Clothes Rack
For this section, participants will fill in the answer right beside the questions.
II. True or False
Example Questions: Shells, including crab shells, are a residual waste
True False
For this section, participants will circle the answer.
III. Free Response
Example Questions: Jason's family decided to dispose of the used battery at home today. They have a box of finished batteries stored on the shelf. When Jason opens the box, he sees the note his mother put in the box saying, "Please throw the light bulb in the bathroom and the box too when you dispose of this." What should Jason do to dispose of all the things he supposes to throw?
For this section, given a complicated scenario, the participants must make the judgment in each case.
IV. Self-Grading assessment
Example Questions: On a scale from one to ten, how much do you think you know about residual waste?
For this section, participants will be asked to grade themselves on this urban policy's awareness and familiarity. It will be subjective, but it can still be a reference for me to see the residents' overall improvements by comparing the average grade of this pre-assessment to after project assessment. It is anonymous, so no one needs to worry about being shamed by the answers they put on the questionnaire.
Here is a more detailed picture of this Chinese version of this little quiz (which is being printed by now):
